Can ChatGPT make phone calls?

Can ChatGPT call a business for me?

No, not on its own, as of November 2026. You can call ChatGPT, but it doesn't call a restaurant, store or office for you.

OpenAI's 1-800-CHATGPT line lets you talk to ChatGPT by voice from a US or Canadian number (OpenAI Help Center). That's you calling ChatGPT, not ChatGPT calling out.

OpenAI's dots agents, announced in September 2026, can also take a voice call from you in ChatGPT (OpenAI). OpenAI describes you calling your dot, not your dot calling a business.

Can Claude make phone calls?

Not built in. Claude Code can, once you connect an MCP phone server.

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard for connecting AI assistants to tools. With a phone server connected, Claude Code can place a call and read the summary and transcript when it ends.

In the Claude apps, custom connectors that send an API key are in beta for some organizations (Claude docs). If you don't see Request headers when you add a custom connector, use Claude Code or option 1.

Option 1: have your assistant write the request

This works with any assistant, including ChatGPT and Claude.

Ask it to include:

• The business and its phone number.
• The one thing to find out or do.
• Times that work, if it's a booking.
• Your name, and your number if they need to call you back.

Leave out card numbers and passwords.

Then open Phone Bud, put the number in To, paste the request into Purpose, and press Start call.

Here's a made-up example. You ask the assistant:

"Write a short phone request asking a bike shop if they can tune up a road bike this week, and the price."

Option 2: connect an MCP phone server

Add Phone Bud's MCP server to a client that accepts an API key header, such as Claude Code.

Create an API key in Phone Bud under Settings, Developer, then run:

Claude Code then has a make_call tool. It places the call and returns the summary and transcript when the call ends. It waits up to 10 minutes by default, then hangs up and returns what it has. Raise max_wait_seconds for long holds; calls still end at 30 minutes. Full setup is on the MCP server page and in phone calls for AI assistants.

ChatGPT can't add it yet. Its connectors don't send custom API keys (OpenAI docs), and Phone Bud has no OAuth sign-in yet.

Limits

Phone Bud places the call and reports back; it can't hand the call to you.

• It calls US and Canada numbers only.
• Calls end at 30 minutes, including hold time. The first call is free, up to 5 minutes.
• The MCP server takes an API key, with no OAuth sign-in yet.
• It introduces itself as your assistant, says it's an AI if asked, and never claims to be you or a person.
• It can't transfer the call to you or pay for anything.
